Oaxaca gives you the ruins, markets and food people go to Mexico City for, in a colonial centre you can cross on foot. Monte Albán sits on a ridge just above town, and the Zapotec fretwork of Mitla and the Tlacolula Sunday market are a cheap colectivo ride east. Fly into Oaxaca or take an ADO bus from Mexico City's TAPO terminal in about 6-7 hours. Eat at market fondas and use colectivos, and three or four days costs little.
