Tulum sells cenotes and ruins with beach-club prices. Inland Yucatán has more of both and charges far less. Use Mérida as the base for a night or two, then move to the small towns: Izamal, painted entirely yellow around a huge Franciscan convent built on a Maya pyramid, and Valladolid, which has a swimming cenote a few blocks from its main square. The Tren Maya and local buses link them, and Uxmal, Ek' Balam and the Homún cenotes are easy day trips. Give it five or six days.
When to go
November to March is the comfortable season, warm rather than brutal. April and May are the hottest months. June to November is the rainy and Atlantic hurricane season, with September and October the riskiest; cenotes stay pleasant all year.

Mistakes to avoid
- Yucatán state is clear of UK travel warnings, and US reporting puts it at the lowest level. If you route via Cancún, Quintana Roo carries a higher US level; keep the transit short.
- Hurricane season runs June to November. Watch forecasts in September and October and keep bookings flexible.
- Archaeological fees for foreigners in Yucatán are the highest in Mexico because a state fee is added to the federal one. Budget for them; they are paid on site.
Ways to spend less
- Sleep in Izamal or Valladolid, not just Mérida. Mornings in the small towns are empty, and rooms cost less.
- Izamal's archaeological zone was free in 2026, and the town's convent and pyramid are a short walk apart.
- Share a Homún mototaxi among four: MXN 300–350 for the circuit becomes under ₹450 each.
