Guanajuato has the colonial streets and painted facades people go to San Miguel de Allende for, but it is a busy university town rather than an expat enclave. The centre is compact enough to walk, the climb to the Pípila lookout is free, and the big museums cost 106-145 MXN. Buses from Mexico City's Terminal Norte take about 4.5-5.5 hours, or fly into León/Bajío (BJX), about 27 km away. Two or three days covers the city; add a day for Dolores Hidalgo.

Mistakes to avoid
- UK travel advice (updated 20 Oct 2026) advises against all but essential travel to the parts of Guanajuato state south-west of road 45D. Guanajuato city is north-east of that line and outside the shaded area on the FCDO map, as is the road from BJX. Buses from Mexico City run along 45D itself, so travel by day and do not detour into the south-west of the state.
- Theft on buses is common and there is a risk of bus hijacking (UK advice). Use first-class daytime buses such as ETN or Primera Plus.
- Streets and stairways are steep and the city is at 2,045 m; take it slowly on the first day. Rooms fill up during the Cervantino in October.
Ways to spend less
- The Pípila view (on foot), the callejones and Jardín Unión cost nothing.
- A full comida corrida at Mercado Hidalgo is about 60-90 MXN.
- Primera Plus from Mexico City (about 350-550 MXN) usually beats flying into BJX door to door.
