Nong Khiaw, Laos: the cheapest place on this list, at about ₹1,100 a day on a shoestring.

Short answer

The cheapest underrated place to visit in 2027 is Nong Khiaw, Laos, at about ₹1,100 a day on a shoestring. Close behind: Ha Giang (Vietnam), Ella (Sri Lanka), Pokhara (Nepal), Siwa (Egypt) and Lushoto (Tanzania), all about ₹1,200 a day. The cheapest in Europe's corner is Dilijan in Armenia (₹1,400), and in South America Chachapoyas in Peru (₹1,500). These are costs on the ground: a bed, local food, local transport and entry fees. Flights to each gateway are not included.

Every place here replaces a famous one: Ha Giang instead of Ha Long Bay, Siwa instead of Sharm el-Sheikh, Theth instead of Ksamil. The famous version is usually where the crowds push prices up; the underrated neighbour is cheaper to sleep and eat in.

The 12 cheapest, ranked by daily cost

We ranked every place outside India in our data by shoestring daily cost. A pure ranking puts all twelve in Asia and Africa: Quy Nhon, Arslanbob & Song-Kul, Nurata & Aydarkul, Bandipur, Nepal, Phong Nha cost no more a day than Dilijan (₹1,400), the cheapest place in Europe's corner. So we kept the four cheapest in Asia, the three cheapest in Africa, the three cheapest in Europe and the Caucasus, and the two cheapest in South America.

How to keep it cheap once you land

  1. Sleep where the locals put travellers. Family guesthouses in Svaneti, Dilijan and Theth include dinner and breakfast, which removes a whole line from your budget.
  2. Take the overnight option. The Hanoi–Ha Giang sleeper bus (₹900) and the Cairo–Siwa night bus (₹800) each save a night's bed.
  3. Share the 4WD. The Mestia–Ushguli jeep costs about ₹1,800 a seat; your guesthouse will pair you with others.
  4. Carry cash. Ushguli has no ATM, and the guesthouses in Theth and Valbona are cash only.
