Cheap Winter Sun Destinations: Where Is Warm and Affordable from December to February
Winter sun usually means the Canaries, Dubai or Phuket, and paying for it. These are the underrated alternatives our data rates good or best in all three winter months, with what a day costs on the ground and a straight answer on how warm each one really is.

Short answer
The cheapest warm places for December to February are Siwa in Egypt's Western Desert (₹1,200 a day on a shoestring), Dahab on the Red Sea (₹1,700), Koh Mook in Thailand and Siquijor in the Philippines (both ₹2,000). For a beach that is properly hot, Koh Mook is the pick: rated best in all three months. Costs are per person per day on the ground; flights to each gateway are not included.
We took every place outside India in Trip Under's data, kept those rated good or best in each of December, January and February, and checked what the weather notes actually say. Not every "winter sun" place is beach-hot in January, so we have split them honestly.

Cape Verde's music town: a pastel port under bare volcanic peaks, live morna in the bars every weekend, and the green mountains of Santo Antão an hour away by ferry. Instead of: Sal.
Winter weather: December to April is driest and most comfortable, with highs around 26 °C. Mindelo Carnival's main parade is on 9 February 2027: book months ahead. Southern summer: Namibia, Chile and New Zealand
December to February is summer south of the equator. These three are coastal and cool-current places, so think long days and fresh air, not tropical heat.

Bus and ferry from Puerto Montt to Castro, about 3.5 h (fare: check before you go).
Dunedin & the Otago Peninsula, New Zealand
A stone Victorian city with the world's only mainland royal albatross colony at the end of a city bus route. Instead of: Queenstown.
Winter weather: December to March is the warm, long-day season. Coastal Otago is cooler and cloudier than much of New Zealand; cheap beds get scarce in February. Per day: ₹4,000 shoestring, ₹7,500 mid-range; a week on a shoestring is about ₹28,000. Fly into: Dunedin (DUD), New Zealand. Shared shuttle from the airport (30 min), about ₹1,900 one way.
One to skip in winter: Djerba
Djerba, Tunisia (instead of the Greek islands), is a lovely cheap island at ₹2,800 a day, but our data rates it only passable from December to February: winter highs are about 12–18 °C, fine for sightseeing and too cool for the beach. Go in May, Sep–Oct instead.
Before you book
- Book Carnival and holidays early. Mindelo's Carnival (9 February 2027) and Namibia's December–January holidays fill rooms.
- Carry your passport in Siwa. The Libyan border is close and military checkpoints are routine. Siwa is conservative: cover shoulders and knees, and swim in clothing at the springs.
- Check entry rules for Cape Verde. Pre-register online at least five days before you fly and pay the airport security fee; check the current amount before you go.
- Bring a layer. Dahab, Siwa and Essaouira are cool at night in winter, and Dunedin and Chiloé are cool most days.
- Read your government's travel advice for Egypt and Oman before you book; parts of Sinai are under advisories, and Dahab sits in the coastal exception.
