Backpacking Southeast Asia on a Budget: Real Daily Costs and a Four-Week Route
Southeast Asia has more of the cheapest places in our data than any other region, but they are not the places everyone goes. Here is what a day costs in sixteen underrated places, each instead of a famous one, and a four-week overland route built only from them.

Short answer
Backpacking Southeast Asia costs about ₹1,720 a day on a shoestring and ₹3,070 mid-range, averaged over the sixteen underrated places below. The cheapest is Nong Khiaw, Laos at ₹1,100 a day; the dearest is Sumba at ₹2,800. A 26-day route through Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia comes to about ₹40,430 on a shoestring, buses included. Flights to the region are not included.
The banana-pancake trail of Bangkok, Pai, Vang Vieng, Ha Long Bay, Siem Reap and Bali is where the crowds go. Every place below replaces one of those, or another famous name, with somewhere quieter.

A shoestring day in Southeast Asia, one person
Shoestring: a dorm or the cheapest guesthouse, street food, local buses and boats, entry fees. Flights not included.
The pattern is clear. The mainland (Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, inland Malaysia) is cheapest, with every place at ₹1,500 a day or less. The islands cost more because every trip out is a boat, and the Indonesian islands are the dearest of all.

A 26-day route: Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia
This route runs overland from northern Vietnam to the Cambodian coast, all of it on buses, using only places from the table. Fly into Hanoi and out of Phnom Penh. Each "getting in" leg is from that place's own record; where we have no figure for a connection, the table says so.

| Total | 26 | ₹5,980 | ₹34,450 | ₹59,500 |
Timing: start in mid-October and you meet each stop in a good month: Ha Giang Loop best in October, good in November; Nong Khiaw best in October, best in November; Pakse best in October, best in November; Battambang good in October, best in November; Kampot passable in October, good in November. Later is worse at the top: Ha Giang is cold and often fogged in from December to February, and Nong Khiaw fills with smoke from burning in March and April. Phong Nha (Hanoi sleeper bus, ₹1,200) is left out on purpose: October and November are its typhoon months, when caves close after heavy rain. Do it on a spring trip instead (best Apr–May).
The islands: where the budget goes up
The Thai, Philippine and Indonesian islands on our list cost more a day, and the boats and short flights between them add up. Budget for them separately from the mainland.
- Koh Mook (Thailand), instead of Phi Phi: ₹2,000 a day shoestring, best Jan–Mar, Dec. Swim 80 metres through a pitch-black sea tunnel and come out in a hidden lagoon beach ringed by cliffs.
- Siquijor (Philippines), instead of Panglao, Bohol: ₹2,000 a day shoestring, best Feb–May. A one-loop island of turquoise waterfall pools, quiet sunset beaches and a 19th-century stone church, an hour by fast ferry from Dumaguete.
- Camiguin (Philippines), instead of Boracay: ₹2,000 a day shoestring, best Mar–May. A small volcanic island where a white sandbar sits under an active volcano, the springs are cold and hot on the same day, and a whole cemetery lies under the sea.
- Batanes (Philippines), instead of Boracay: ₹1,600 a day shoestring, best Feb–May. Green cliff-top pastures falling into a wild sea, and stone-and-thatch Ivatan villages built to outlast typhoons, at the very top of the Philippines.
- Siargao (Philippines), instead of Boracay: ₹2,200 a day shoestring, best Feb–Apr. Better waves, a fraction of the resort crowds.
- Flores (Labuan Bajo & Komodo) (Indonesia), instead of Bali: ₹2,500 a day shoestring, best Apr–Oct. Dragons, pink sand, and none of Bali's traffic.
- Sumba (Indonesia), instead of Bali: ₹2,800 a day shoestring, best May–Sep. Turquoise lagoons, rolling savanna and villages of towering thatched roofs where the Marapu faith still sets the calendar, an hour's flight from Bali.
Weather decides the islands. Koh Mook's direct boats run November to April and the Emerald Cave closes 1 June to 30 September. Batanes flights and boats stop in typhoon season (June to November). Flores has calmer seas in its dry season (April to November); Sumba is easiest May to September.
Ways to make the money go further
- Take the night bus. The Hanoi–Ha Giang sleeper (₹900) and Hanoi–Phong Nha sleeper (₹1,200) save a night's bed. Phong Nha buses arrive at 3–5 am, so book that night's room.
- Ride with a licence. On the Ha Giang Loop, the Bolaven Plateau and in Quy Nhon, riding without a licence your insurance recognises means no cover at all. Hire an "easy rider" if you do not have one.
- Never leave your passport as a bike deposit in Cambodia; in Laos, photograph the bike first and agree in writing who pays for damage.
- Withdraw less often. Thai ATMs charge foreign cards on every withdrawal, and Siargao's few ATMs run dry at weekends.
- Stay on paths in rural Laos and Cambodia. Unexploded ordnance and landmines remain off the main routes.
