Places to Visit in the UAE Other Than Dubai: 9 Underrated Picks, Priced

Most visitors see two cities and a desert safari. The UAE also has mountain lakes, an Indian Ocean coast, Bronze Age tombs, a dune taller than most buildings and the oldest mosque in the country. Here is every underrated place we cover, emirate by emirate, with what a day costs.

Hatta Dam, 90 minutes from Dubai Mall by express bus: the Dubai most visitors never see.

Short answer

The best places to visit in the UAE other than Dubai are Hatta (instead of Dubai Marina), Al Ain (instead of Abu Dhabi city), Jebel Jais (instead of the Burj Khalifa deck), Khor Fakkan, Fujairah & Dibba, Umm Al Quwain, Mleiha, Liwa Oasis and Sir Bani Yas Island. A mid-range day on the ground runs from ₹7,500 in Al Ain to ₹19,000 on Sir Bani Yas Island. Go between November and March.

Every place on Trip Under names the famous place it replaces. In the UAE, the famous places are two cities. Everything below is within a three-hour drive of Dubai or Abu Dhabi airport. Trip Under is not an agency and takes no commission; every place page links to the real buses, rooms and tickets so you book each piece yourself.

Emirate by emirate

Dubai and Abu Dhabi: the gateways

Dubai (DXB) is the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall, the Marina and the desert-safari pick-ups. Abu Dhabi (AUH) is the city skyline, the Louvre and the Yas Island theme parks. Use them as airports.

Abu Dhabi emirate: oasis, dunes and an island

Al Ain is the cheapest place on the list: ₹3,600 a day on a shoestring. The bus from Abu Dhabi or Dubai is about ₹650 one way. Liwa Oasis needs a hire car (2 h 45 m from Abu Dhabi). Sir Bani Yas Island is the dearest: boats are free only for resort guests and day visits are not confirmed, so arrange the crossing with the hotel.

Dubai emirate: Hatta

Hatta is the Dubai enclave in the Hajar mountains. The H02 Hatta Express from Dubai Mall takes 1 h 30 m and costs about ₹650 one way; a ₹50 hop-on bus then links the dam, the Wadi Hub and the Heritage Village.

Sharjah: fossils and a mountain bay

Mleiha is an hour inland from Dubai by car for dunes, a fossil ridge and a 4,500-year-old tomb; Khor Fakkan is a mountain bay on the other coast. Sharjah is stricter than Dubai: alcohol is illegal anywhere in the emirate, and modest dress is expected.

Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain

Fujairah & Dibba is the Indian Ocean coast. Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah has the UAE's highest road, nearly 1,900 m up. Umm Al Quwain is the quietest emirate: a mangrove lagoon, by bus with a change in Ajman.

Sir Bani Yas Island and Mleiha cost more because their best days are paid activities priced per person. Al Ain, Khor Fakkan and Umm Al Quwain are cheap because their best sights are free.

A 7-day UAE road trip, Dubai to Dubai

Six of the nine places, one base a day, from Dubai airport and back. You need a hire car: Mleiha has no useful bus.

Hire car with fuel, 7 days (per car)₹25,200
Total, one person driving alone₹90,800

On a shoestring the ground cost is about ₹35,100. Two people split the car. The daily figures already include some local transport, so this is a ceiling.

Flying into Abu Dhabi instead? Take the bus to Al Ain, then hire a car for Liwa Oasis and Sir Bani Yas, 200 km apart.

Two free hiking areas

Hatta Mountain Trails: 17 colour-graded trails from the Wadi Hub, free. The only cost is the bus: about ₹1,400 for the return H02 from Dubai plus two hop-on rides.

Jebel Jais Trails: the UAE's highest marked trails, up to about 1,640 m. Free. The seasonal RAK shuttle is about ₹400 return; check the Sayr app for this season. Carry at least 3 litres of water each.

Sacred places: what to book and what to wear

Seven working places of worship, open to visitors of every faith. Three need a booking, and Al Noor may. All expect covered shoulders and knees at least.

When to go, and the summer heat

Jan, Feb, Mar, Nov, Dec: every one of the nine is rated "best". From May to September, none of the nine is rated better than "passable", and most are "avoid".

Jebel Jais is the exception: the mountain stays open all year and is cooler than the coast, but the zipline, sledder and hikes pause in the heat.

Is it safe right now?

The place records quote the UK FCDO advice (updated 24 July 2026): "Iranian strikes in the region since 8 July mean possible flight cancellations and short-notice airspace closures." It does not advise against travel, but says terrorists are likely to try to attack in the UAE. Keep flights flexible, and don't photograph ports or security sites. Several places of worship closed in March and April 2026 during the conflict, so check each one's official site before you go.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best places to visit in the UAE other than Dubai?

Hatta, Al Ain, Jebel Jais, Khor Fakkan, Fujairah & Dibba, Umm Al Quwain, Mleiha, Liwa Oasis and Sir Bani Yas Island. Each replaces a famous sight: Hatta instead of Dubai Marina, Al Ain instead of Abu Dhabi city, Liwa instead of a Dubai desert safari.

How much does a day cost in the UAE outside Dubai?

On the ground, per person, from about ₹3,600 on a shoestring in Al Ain to ₹19,000 mid-range on Sir Bani Yas Island. Flights are extra.

Can you see the UAE without a car?

Partly. Hatta (about ₹650 one way on the H02), Al Ain (about ₹650 one way by bus), Ras Al Khaimah for Jebel Jais and Umm Al Quwain all have buses from Dubai. Liwa Oasis, Mleiha and Sir Bani Yas realistically need a hire car.

Is the UAE too hot to visit in summer?

For these places, yes. From May to September none of the nine is rated better than "passable", inland temperatures pass 40°C, and many activities close. Go from November to March.

Is it safe to travel to the UAE right now?

The UK FCDO (updated 24 July 2026) does not advise against travel, but warns that Iranian strikes in the region since 8 July mean possible flight cancellations and short-notice airspace closures. Check the latest advice before you fly and keep plans flexible.
